Bed Bug Treatment · Richmond, BC

Bed bug treatment in Richmond, without the guesswork.

Bed bugs are not a cleanliness problem. They travel in luggage, used furniture and between units in shared buildings, which is why they turn up in Richmond condo towers and family homes alike. Before you throw out the mattress, tell us what you're seeing. We'll try to connect you with an independent provider who can confirm it and explain your options.

When to act

When bed bug treatment is worth a call.

  • Small dark spots, like a marker dot, along mattress seams and the box spring
  • Flat, reddish-brown bugs about the size of an apple seed
  • Pale shed skins and tiny white eggs in seams, screw holes and bed frame joints
  • Itchy bites in lines or clusters, often on arms, shoulders and neck
  • Rust-coloured smears on sheets or pillowcases

What to expect

Bed Bug Treatment: what is involved.

The first job is confirmation. Bites alone prove nothing, because reactions vary and other insects bite too. A provider looks for live bugs, shed skins and spotting in the seams of the mattress, the bed frame, the headboard and nearby furniture.

There are two main treatment routes. Heat treatment raises the temperature of a room high enough, for long enough, to kill bugs and eggs, with the treatment itself done in a day. Chemical treatment uses residual products applied to cracks, seams and furniture over two or more visits, usually about two weeks apart, to catch bugs that hatch after the first application. Many providers combine methods and add steam for mattresses and soft furniture. Vancouver Coastal Health says to be prepared for more than one treatment.

Preparation is half the result. You will usually be asked to launder and bag bedding and clothing on high heat, reduce clutter and leave furniture where it is. Moving items to other rooms spreads the problem.

In a condo, townhouse or rental, tell your strata or landlord early. Bed bugs move through wall voids and along pipes, so neighbouring units often need inspecting. In BC rentals, pest control is generally the landlord's responsibility, and tenants are expected to report it promptly and cooperate with preparation.

Step by step

From first message to finished job.

  1. Confirm it

The provider inspects beds, furniture and baseboards for live bugs and other evidence before recommending anything.

  2. Prepare

You get a preparation list: laundry on high heat, bagging items and clearing access to beds and baseboards.

  3. Treat

Heat, chemical or a combined treatment is carried out. You may need to be out of the home for several hours.

  4. Follow up

A return visit checks for surviving bugs and newly hatched eggs, with a second treatment if needed.

Cost

What bed bug treatment costs in Richmond.

Bed bug pricing depends on how many rooms are affected, the method used and how many visits are included. Heat treatment generally costs more than chemical treatment and is carried out in a day, though a follow-up may still be needed. Ask whether follow-up visits are included in the price.

FAQ

Bed Bug Treatment questions.

Can I get rid of bed bugs myself?

Light infestations caught very early are sometimes handled with thorough laundering, steam and mattress encasements, but store-bought sprays rarely reach eggs or bugs hidden in walls and furniture joints. Bug bombs tend to scatter them into other rooms. Most people need professional treatment.

Do I have to throw out my mattress?

Usually not. Mattresses and box springs can be treated and then sealed in bed-bug-proof encasements. Throwing furniture out mid-infestation often spreads bugs through hallways and to neighbours.

Who pays for bed bug treatment in a rental?

In BC, landlords are generally responsible for arranging and paying for treatment in rental housing. The Tenant Resource and Advisory Centre says that a landlord who believes the tenant caused the problem should still pay for treatment promptly and seek compensation afterward. Report it in writing as soon as you find it and follow the preparation instructions.

How long does treatment take to work?

Heat treatment is carried out in a day. Chemical treatment works over two to four weeks, across two or more visits. Vancouver Coastal Health says to be prepared for more than one treatment, so expect a follow-up inspection either way.

How did I get bed bugs?

The usual routes are travel, second-hand furniture and spread between units in shared buildings. Richmond has an international airport next door and a lot of multi-unit housing, so all three apply here.
