Ant Control · Richmond, BC

Ant control in Richmond for carpenter and pavement ants.

This page covers two ants that local pest control companies list for Richmond. Carpenter ants are large, black and hollow out damp wood to nest in it. Pavement ants are tiny, nest under slabs and pavers and march indoors for crumbs. They need different treatments, so identification comes first. Tell us what you're seeing and we'll try to connect you with an independent provider.

When to act

When ant control is worth a call.

  • Small piles of fine sawdust-like shavings below window frames, beams or door frames
  • Winged ants emerging inside the house on a warm spring day
  • Faint rustling inside a wall or ceiling when the house is quiet
  • Trails of tiny dark ants running to the kitchen, pet bowls or the recycling
  • Little mounds of sand along driveway cracks, patio pavers or the garage slab

What to expect

Ant Control: what is involved.

Carpenter ants do not eat wood. They excavate it to build galleries, and they strongly prefer wood that is already damp. In Richmond, that often means window sills, deck ledgers, roof edges and anything near a slow leak. The colony usually has a parent nest outdoors, in a stump or landscape timber, and satellite nests inside the building.

Treating a carpenter ant problem means finding those nests. A provider follows foraging trails, checks moisture-prone areas and treats the nests and travel routes directly. Fixing the moisture source is part of the cure. Leave the wet wood in place and a new colony will find it.

Pavement ants are a different job. Spraying the ants you can see kills a few workers and leaves the colony untouched. Baits work better: workers carry the bait back to the nest, where it reaches the queen. It looks like nothing is happening for a few days, then the trails stop.

For either ant, wiping away trails with soapy water, storing sweet and greasy food in sealed containers and trimming branches that touch the house all make treatment hold longer.

Step by step

From first message to finished job.

  1. Identify the ant

Size, colour and where they are nesting tell the provider which species it is and which treatment fits.

  2. Find the nest

Trails are followed back to nests in wood, wall voids, under slabs or outdoors.

  3. Treat the colony

Nests are treated directly, or baits are placed so workers carry them back to the queen.

  4. Fix what attracted them

You get advice on moisture, damaged wood, food storage and vegetation touching the building.

Cost

What ant control costs in Richmond.

Carpenter ant work costs more than most pest jobs because it involves locating and treating nests inside the structure. Smaller ant problems are usually handled with baiting or a perimeter treatment, which costs less.

FAQ

Ant Control questions.

Do carpenter ants mean my house has rot?

Often, yes, at least somewhere. Carpenter ants favour wood softened by moisture, so a nest indoors is a good reason to check for leaks around windows, roofs, decks and plumbing. They can extend into sound wood once established.

Are carpenter ants as bad as termites?

They work more slowly and they don't eat the wood, but a colony left for years can weaken framing. The moisture problem that attracted them is usually doing damage of its own.

Why do ants come back every spring?

The colony never left. Ants slow down in winter and become active again as it warms up. If only the visible workers were killed last year, the queen is still producing more.

Should I spray the ants I see?

For pavement ants, spraying is mostly wasted effort and can interfere with baits. For carpenter ants, spraying foragers does nothing to the nest. It is more useful to note where you see them and when, which helps a provider trace the nest.
